DogPatch Leap Year Tidbits

The earth travels around the sun in

365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes and 46 seconds.

As the hours add up—we need to add a day every 4 years.

Yeh, leap year.

Leap years are always divisible by 4.

Except– it cannot be divisible by 100.  So 1900 was not a leap year.  Another added exception – unless the year  is divisible by 400….

So 1600 and 2000 were leap years!

Get it?

Hekzebiah Hawkins was so afraid that his ‘homely daughter’ would not git a man.  Courtin’ was not in her stars, so he started the foot race to catch a man.

Li’l Abners’ Other Facts

Sadie Hawkins’ Pa’s name is Hekzebiah.  He was one of

DogPatch’s earliest settlers.

Sadie was 35 years old when Pa, afeard that she would be livin’ at home for the rest of ‘er life, frantically called together all matrimony-available men of DogPatch.

A foot race was decreed with Sadie in hot pursuit of a husband.

Pa’s Instructions for the race….

“When ah fires [my gun], all o’ yo’ kin start-a-runnin!  When ah fires agin—after givin’ yo’ a fair start—Sadie starts a

runnin’.  Th’ one she ketches’ll be her husbin.”

The comic strip lasted 4 decades.
